Ecommerce audit

How to audit an ecommerce website without drowning in screenshots

A practical ecommerce website audit: what to crawl, how to rank issues by revenue impact, and when a tool beats a checklist.

Start from the buying journey, not from the homepage copy

A useful ecommerce audit follows a shopper: home or campaign landing, collection, product page, then the friction that happens before checkout. If you start with brand guidelines or a 90-item SEO checklist, you will produce a document nobody ships.

Getmoresales scores conversion, product SEO, mobile speed, catalog and trust on the same scale so the first slide is “what to fix first”, not “here are 40 observations”.

What to collect on every store

You need evidence, not opinions. At minimum: the live theme, sampled product pages, screenshots of home and PDP, Core Web Vitals or a lab proxy, structured data, and the conversion components that actually sit on the page (reviews, delivery promise, sticky add to cart, search).

Skip checkout login walls unless you have a test account. The audit should say that limit in public: we do not pretend we completed a purchase.

  • Platform and apps that change PDP or speed (especially Shopify)
  • Catalog signals: titles, images, schema, stock, variants
  • Trust: reviews, returns, legal pages, payment cues
  • Mobile: tap targets, sticky ATC, LCP on PDP

Rank findings by revenue impact, not by how easy they are to screenshot

A missing favicon is not in the same class as a product page without reviews or a 4.5s LCP. Our report axes use explicit weights (speed, SEO, UX, pricing). If your audit tool cannot explain why item #1 beats item #7, it is a crawl dump.

Write each issue as: evidence on this URL, why it blocks a sale or an indexation path, and the first fix. Link the methodology so a consultant can disagree with a weight instead of arguing with a black box.

When to run a tool versus hire a consultant

Use a crawl-based audit when you need a baseline this week, a second opinion on a theme launch, or a comparable score across a portfolio. Hire a senior CRO consultant when you need research (session replay, interviews, experiment design) that a crawler cannot see.

The two stack: run Getmoresales first, then spend the consultant hours on the three leaks the crawl ranked highest.

FAQ

How long should an ecommerce audit take?
A crawl-based baseline is minutes. A consultant workshop is days. Do not wait weeks for a PDF of generic advice.
Do I need access to Shopify admin?
No for a storefront audit. Admin access helps for apps and theme settings, but the shopper never sees the admin.
What is the difference vs an SEO audit?
SEO is one axis (catalog, schema, indexation). An ecommerce audit also scores conversion, speed, trust and merchandising.
